Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an extremely effective type of talking therapy

CBT is the preferred treatment choice for many psychological problems and is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE)

Although CBT acknowledges the past and how it has possibly influenced the way you feel now, the therapy itself focuses on the 'here and now' and examines the way we think about situations, people and the world. It helps you to notice the relationship between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. CBT helps you to become aware of any unhelpful thinking patterns and begin to change the way you think about things, which can have a direct impact on how you feel, and in turn, how you behave. An interesting thing to consider is that it is not an event itself that affects how we feel but the way we interpret or think about that event.

CBT is often a short treatment, lasting between 6-12 weeks. Most clients notice change and positive results even in this short time. Depending on the client and the problems they're experiencing though, some treatment plans can last several months. At the beginning of therapy, current problems are explored and a treatment plan is devised. This treatment plan incorporates various tools, techniques and skills which are shared and practised in sessions but which the client may be asked to use in between sessions, to increase learning and help them move towards their goal and beyond.

Sessions are usually weekly and last around 50 minutes, however, I will always ensure that the session does not end abruptly but in a timely, sensitive way
